In a space of five hours, without firing a shot and at the cost of only a broken finger, the police of a relatively small city had done what the combined forces of several states, including that of Americaâs second largest metropolis, had tried so long and unsuccessfully to do. The Tucson police, of course, had one great allyâthe gangâs own false sense of security.
At the station Sergeant Mark Robbins had just made positive identification of Makley, Clark, and Pierpont from their fingerprints but Dillinger still insisted his name was Frank Sullivan. William R. Mathews, editor and publisher of the Arizona Daily Star, followed Dillinger, who looked to him like an overworked bookkeeper, into the identification room.
Sergeant Robbins, who was examining a sheaf of pictures, suddenly held up one. âLook what we have here!â he said. He examined Dillingerâs left wrist. There was a scar. He found another under Dillingerâs mustache. âThis man is John Dillinger,â he said unequivocally.
The editor went to the door, opened it. Standing outside was one of his reporters, Dave Brinegar. âTheyâve got John Dillinger,â whispered Mathews.
Since the jail at the police station was too small, the gangsters and their women were taken under heavy guard to the nearby Pima County jail located in the County Courthouse, a beautiful building of Spanish design with a multicolored ceramic dome. Numerous deputies in high-heeled boots and sombreros, six-shooters banging against their hips, were already guarding the building with shotguns. Excitement built as curious citizens gathered. Truth and fiction began to intertwine and rumors spread. One story said that $23,816 had been found on the gangsters. That was true. Another story said that more than $30,000 in rewards would be given the captors. This seemed entirely possible but, in fact, was far from the truth. The total rewards on all four men amounted to only a few hundred dollars.
